Dear Friends and Family,
It’s hard to know where to begin to express gratitude and ask support for an organization like Make A Wish, that has provided such joy to so many children and families who have faced some of the hardest adversities life can hand you. I have had the misfortune and the fortune to have experienced those hardships and that joy first hand.
In July of 2013 my then 2 year old daughter Kiley was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She spent the next 2 months receiving intensive inpatient chemotherapy and the next two years receiving weekly chemotherapy and steroid treatments. On Sept 10,2015, 2 weeks before her fifth birthday, she received her last chemotherapy treatment and transitioned to after care monitoring. At that time she had spent more than half of her life sick and receiving heavy toxic medications to save her life. We were offered the opportunity to speak with Make A Wish within 48 hours of her initial diagnosis to talk about her Wish. As a family we decided to wait until she was well, because we had the luxury of knowing that although the road would be long and hard the likelihood was she would be well and we wanted her to be able to enjoy all her wish had to offer.
Kiley decided to go to Disney World. I know it was the most incredible experience of her life, but it was also the most incredible experience of my life. To see my child healthy and happy treated like a princess in every sense of the word. I can’t begin to explain the level of care and thoughtfulness that went into this trip and I can’t even put into words the gratitude I feel for everything Make A Wish has done for my family.
What is so special about Make A Wish for me is more than the trip they gave my daughter and my family, but the hope and joy they provide to so many children and families who face what for many is unimaginable. Going through two years of treatment in a pediatric cancer center you meet many amazing families and amazing children. Far too many of whom never had the chance to have the outcome and potential for a long healthy life that my daughter has. Their Wish is often the most significant thing they are able to experience in their short lives. Thanks to Make A Wish children who are forced to endure things children never should are given a moment to just be children again, they truly make your wildest dreams come true.
I will never be able to say thank you enough to Make A Wish for all of the children and families they have helped, including mine. I only hope we can do enough to ensure they are able to continue to help many, many more. Please considering donating to the wonderful organization! Any amount helps!
