Last year has been particularly tough for me and my family as I lost my mother in a yearlong battle to cancer. Despite losing my closest bond, this experience has given me a revised perspective about relationships and life. Her last few months were extremely painful but instead of remembering her through my last moments with her, I want to live by all the wonderful memories we built together with the time I had with her.
There is one memory that comes to mind:
One school custom I was particularly fond of was birthday celebrations. Each student on their birthday brought a piece of candy or chocolate for their classmates. It was my birthday and my parents would help me decide what chocolate to distribute. As years went by, we followed this custom and looking back at it today, I ask myself, “What if I chose to give those 30 pieces of candy to the orphan children?” The excitement of a birthday only lasted a few hours in the classroom but had I chosen to give the candy to a less fortunate child, the feeling would have lasted a lifetime.
Reflecting on my years, my approach to life has not changed much – I still try to focus on making “my” day special. Two decades ago, it was the chocolate that made my day special and today it is a dinner at a Michelin Star restaurant. This year, I want to make “my” day special by making someone else feel special. My mother’s birthday would have been a week before mine and to commemorate our special days, I have launched a campaign on Make-A-Wish foundation. If you wish to make “our” day special, please donate
I appreciate all your efforts, be it in whatever amount and am sure the child will have lots of smiles and memories to share for a lifetime.
